Neil Hann
About the Artist
Following a career in art teach I am now a full-time artist. I am a newcomer to Coochiemudlo Island following a lifetime being inspired by the geological formations and colours of the Flinders Ranges in South Australia, my state of origin.
My interest has been in the inter-relationship between seemingly ageless geological formations, the ravages of nature ad the patters created through time. Most of my designs are discoveries of unique gems of composition found in nature, processed in the studio, refined, and reordered as a response to my minds image of a piece of art – informed by my love of modernism and formular driven creative processes.
I use aspects of modernist styles, amalgamating layer upon layer of broken colour to fill in between bold continuous outlines. Layering gives a painting a visible chronology of construction. This chain of events is readable and creates an important contemplative element to the work.
The ephemeral nature of the resulting surface speaks to the constant changes occurring in an apparently timeless geological landscape. The overlaying graphic line used as both a starting point and conclusion is crucial in pulling in all the elements together within the context of the original place. It is also a strong statement my personal modernist aesthetic.
