About the Artist
Straddievarious Gallery is pleased to support the GIRRWARLI Art & Cultural Centre, for a pilot project designed to provide support for Gooniyandi Artists from the remote Aboriginal Community of Kurinyjarn, located in the rugged hill country of the Mueller Ranges, The Kimberley, Western Australia.
GIRRWARLI is a not-for-profit organisation from one of the poorest regions for Aboriginal people in Australia. Girrwarli artists have faced enormous hardship in the past three years, having been displaced from a dwelling by non-Aboriginal influences, where they have painted for 25 years. As a result, this has left the Girrwarli artists depleted of funds without a place to paint or ways of selling their art, until major funding can be found to establish a new Art Centre at Kurinyjarn Community.
Our partnership with Girrwarli will enable both organisations to foster innovative and educational benefits for closing the gap, by introducing their traditional works of art to a wider audience. Forming a partnership with the Girrwarli Artists gives us the opportunity to embrace and promote traditional Aboriginal art, and to assist Girrwarli in keeping their dreams alive.
